That nasty Bronze Beast!
Sometimes it does appear to be a matter of timing for it to go back far enough that you have no difficulty getting through. You can try going back down the hall and approaching again. You can try casting VANISH (if you have it) from where you are and see if it will place you in the halls beyond the beast (some players have managed to do this and by pass the need for the dragon armor).
