Hi There, I'm new to this game too, but I think you'll like my money making tip. I couldn't get the new character at the inn thing to work other than to give me 200 at a time.
What def worked for me is taking a fighter who is a member of the fighters guild, going to "buy special items" (In the guild menu in the smithy), buying as many +1 arrows as possible and selling them right back to the smithy for 50% profit, I made 100,000 in less than 10 minutes. I was a bit wary of cheating, but hey if the guy thinks he's run low on these and wants to pay more then why not?.
I am so impressed by this excellent (and cheap!) game, far better than Wizardry & Pools of radiance but not quite Baldurs gate / Icewind Dale.
