I can't add much to Wyvern's thoughts on the first two questions, other than I agree.
On the third, I've found myself much less concerned with class paths than when I first started. I prefer to keep spellcasters in their original class until they've gotten the higher level spells (storm spells and exorcism, in particular). Then I move them through other classes, usually spending time as at least a ninja, samurai, and perhaps ranger (to get fletchery). I tend to avoid bards (never saw the real advantage), and I convert fighters to barbarians ASAP. Doing that allows me to avoid having a rogue at the start.
But, as Wyvern said, the best part is that every party combination is a good one. Find what you like and enjoy it.
