I can see great differences between the two games. I like a lot of things in Wiz & War and hate a lot of things in Wiz8.
In Wizards & Warriors you lack anyway of tilting the camera angle. Trying to look down at the ground is most frustrating. Not to mention trying to get something that is in a crevice is near impossible. The game is very linear. You do not have the option to roam about much. If you do not do things in a certain sequence you are up the creek.
In Wiz8 it seems to be all fight oriented. Very little quests, but lots of fighting. Add to that the frustration of leveling up only to find the monsters are equal or greater then you when you find them. This game requires much planning and forethought into party creation. Much more than W&W does. You have more freedome to roam about, but that doesn't mean you will have victory around every corner.
On the positive side: W&W does allow you to reroll for better stats in the character creation stage. Many hours are spent just trying to get stats that total 80 or more so you can advance to the elite class that much sooner. The fighting is much better balanced and the there are lots of quests.
