Partly right:
As a ninja, you will probably only get 1 point to put in skill until you get to the same level that you were at as a barbarian. You will also only gain 1 HP per level until you reach the median barbarian of low level / ninja of high level. In other words, if you are a barbarian of level 13, you'll only get 1 skill point until you hit level 12 as a ninja. Starting at level 13, you'll get 1/4 of your intelligence score to put in skills. HP will be somewhat different, you might have to wait until you reach level 22 (arbitrary) before you start gaining more than 1 HP per level.
The good news: East of Ishad N'Ha you'll gain XP much quicker than in the Valeia region (with the exeption of the Spirit of Rumphy... hint). So, by the time you get to the Brimloch, you might have surpassed your barbarian level.
