My last party started without a rogue. Converted a warrior to barbarian right away (okay, both of them converted) and had him specialize in Traps & Locks until the designated lockpicker was ready to change class.
Was only an issue for the first hour or so of game play -- by then, he was able to pick most of the locks, and I kept using the lockpicks I'd find.
I also deployed what some may consider poor sportsmanship, but others may consider clever gaming.
I'd start picking the lock, and of the 9 boxes, if the first several came up black, I'd stop the picking and start over. After a few runs, you know which boxes are the good ones, and if you start with those, you save valuable time in lockpicking.
