The rule of thumb seems to be level 9-10 for warriors (no magic) and level 12-14 for magic users. One thing for magic users: make sure that you get all the high level spells in the realm you'll loose before you change. If you don't plan on coming back to that realm, get at least one lvl 7 attack spell before you change.

For exemple:

Wizard changed to barbarian and then samourai: don't waste your time in sun 'cause you get it back when you go to samourai, but, make sure that you get meteorstorm before you leave the wizard role.
