Don, there is no cure for the problem you have - it's reload last save time. The elevators in serpent temple, and the the one in D'Soto's tower are notoriously buggy. They seem to get frozen by random monster encounters. Save before going into one. In the tower, I had to turn encounters to seldom to be able to get up, get what I needed, and get out before the lift froze (jumping out the window is useless as I realised later as you can't get back in then). That may help if you are having repeated trouble.
