1) Are you sure you're close enough? Has Ekbu "threatened" your party already?
2) If the answer to both of those is "yes", are you choosing "Ukabu" from the talk list? It's best to do that rather than typing it in, because spelling and sometimes capitalization make the difference in the game's parser.
Hope this helps. Try going all the way in the hut and then attempting to talk to him again, if you haven't done this.
