Unfortunately, true and something worth keeping in mind if you replay the game with a different party. One player made the good suggestion of always using your level up points to increase those skills which are going to be first to drop out of sight when additional skills are added. While it is tempting to train in every available skill it may not actually be wise. W&W is heavily sword and staff biased. You can omit training in the other weapon skills and do very well in this game.
For my own parties, I have tried to have each specialize in a few important skills and really get those increased before I add in new skills.
