Ok, after installing new audio and video codecs, I can now run the game without being kicked out to the desktop anytime I try and exit the town.
However, I've noticed that I don't seem to get any speech inside any of the buildings in the town. Should the armorer, tavern keeper, etc. have speech?
I seem to get sound and speech ok in the other parts of the game (as far as I know anyway).
Has anyone else run into this, and if so, any fixes?
