Not sure I understand your problem.
After I gave the scroll of banishing to Adrianna, I declined her offer to become a vampire and chose the key rather than the vampire ring. When identified, the key appears as "Lich key" and this opens the room in the lich's study which contains a treasure chest. If the key doesn't work (?!?), you can still enter this room and overcome the "level 12 lock" with either level 12 lockpick skill or level 7 or so lockpick skill with a level 5 lock pick set..
