Try this...go to your start menu/programs/activision/wizards & warriors menu and check out the online help files...one of them will give you a walk through to this whole area. Your problem does not sound typical for that area which is why i am referring you to the walk-through...it has been a while since I played the game but I thought the lever was supposed to open the door...try the other side too!
