To make the gong sound you should first repair the mallet, which parts are one in a barrel in the main part of the map and the other I canīt remember right now, just take a look at everything you can look into. I could tell you there is nothing you should open with a thief (at least nothing really necessary).
To the sword quest, you should read the books in order, first the one next to the entrance and going farther each time till you read the farthest and it will say in blue fonts: When you read the last book something opens etc etc...' and you should go to the sword and heīll talk you.
