GRomi, they mean the ratlings close to the second horse, not those at the Burnt-Out House.

For my two cents, my groups usually start as Wizards, after that Bard, so everyone has several Meteorstorms or even Icestorms by the time they meet the Mantraps. There should be two groups of them, mostly four in all, so I switch spawn from often to seldom, so that I don't have to fight any more monsters at the same time, and go look for them.

Before heading out I have everyone cast several Merlin's Shields on themselves, Mana replenishes very fast, so by the time they face the Mantraps they have regained most of their Stone mana, but Merlin's Shield helps a lot against poison damage from Mantraps. I was surprised it does, as poison attacks aren't considered magic in some games, but in W&W they seem to be.
