One thing not to do is attack them head on in melee combat unless you're at LEAST level 18 with powerful weapons blessed to the max. However, chances are you're not that powerful so the best way I found to go at them is long distance spells and missle weapons. They appear after you fight the band of ratling bandits a little more than halfway (am I right on the distance?) to Shurugeon Castle. Kill the Ratlings and run, any direction you can, they spawn moments after killing the ratlings. Then, after you ran a ways, turn around and SLOWLY head back to where they were. The moment they appear, start bombarding them with the most powerful magic you have. Also, flamedrop works very well. If your wizard runs out of mana, start shooting arrows, throwing knives, whatever missle weapons you have. The key to beating them in my experience, is to never let them get close. It is these creatures that have consistently torn my party into itty-bitty pieces. Be very careful, using whatever method works for you. I'd like to hear of someone beating them in close combat but I wouldn't try it.
