Only one side will work. You choose one side or another. The doll is used to open one of the paths that you'll soon find. I think the one you took is for the wizard's path (one on the left?). There are 2 vestal urns in a room not far from where you are. Just put the doll in the one that corresponds to the stairway you took it from (if you went left, put the doll in the urn on the left or vice versa). Don't worry nothing got screwed up
