I suggest to train your characters a bit before starting the game. The training solves some unnecessary problems like Amazoni Mantraps, lava pools, bad skill values and so on. If you decide for training (for example, do the Crypt several times before setting off) then do not forget that Reset Adventures clears all inactive roles - you can gain a particular role again later if you want.
If you decide for training, then:
a) You can be a generalist and you can still have acceptable values for all required skills - train in the guilds.
b) Change roles often. This keeps your level low and allows you to gain levels fast, i.e., you will have a lot of opportunities to train in the guilds.
c) Secure some HP and the Athletics skill for your wizard. Turn him into a Barbarian for a while then return to a Warlock. Your wizard stops to be the one who is killed/drowned/etc. permanently.
It is always correct to leave the base roles. The elite roles have better abilities.
