There's a statuette called "Bridging Monkeys" found in a chest in the underground rooms (you have to "plunge through" the checkerboard floor and then take the underground corridors. It's in a chest in one of those rooms down there.

When you get it, place it on the monkey altar. It will let you climb the stairs over that pit.

Actually, it may be called "Bridging Baboons"...I forget now. You'll know it when you see it.

Also check your inventory and see if you already have it! Didn't you post earlier about having fallen through and fighting a "Guardian of Isis"?
