To patch or not to patch, that is the question!
The answer is simple, it depends what kind of game you want to play. If you are looking at lots of gold (which really isn't required in the early stages and quite sufficient in the middle to late stages), lots of HP, many assassins, bugs... then my advice is not to patch.
If, however, you'd rather play a more "realistic" game in which you don't start with a gazilion gold pieces, work hard for you HP, plan on having only 1 assassin (unless of course you visit Wyvern... see, I didn't forget you this time
), or have hardware related problems, then I would suggest to patch.
Regardless, if you plan on using the Inn gold cheat and then patch, you'll be able to keep your money.
