You can solo first time through, but be prepared to change your role several times, as you'll be needing different schools of magic.

Suggestion: If you're going to solo, create an Elven Wizard, then take him to Ranger if you want a ranger.

(HINT: it's the only way to get Stone magic unless you want to wait until almost endgame).
