If you're careful, you can sometimes get into the Inn and recruit Jaheria and Khalid before you have to fight him. I've been able to do it once. IIRC, it was night time and I sent a stealthed Imoen to the other side of him, then had him start chasing her. The rest of my party made the door, and Imoen got him tangled in some rubble and was able to get around him and join everyone at the door.
