The mechanism in the center of the room with the warders. It looks like some sort of elevator to me.
To the original poster: If you are stuck at the level with all the dusty books (lvl -3), then you might be doing the same mistake as I did:
I picked up the key stone from the statue that keeps throwing stinking clouds at you (could we call it 'the farting statue' for the sake of convenience
), but I thought that the locked door at the south east area of the map, should be opened up by activating the switches at 'the room with the many switches'. I therefor kept one of my party members in 'the room with the many switches' to switch the switches, while the rest of my party were standing in front of the door. The problem was that the NPC in 'the room with the many switches' was the one that got the key stone in his inventory

It took some time before I stopped smacking my head into the table, after I realized what was wrong
