I ran into the same problem until I realized that you cannot wear the Vampire Ring you got in Skull Castle without the patch. Just a guess, but if you brought the ring back, and then equipped it, that would account for the freezing up.
Since my parties (I have played several times) always have someone with the ability to create rings or armor that regenerates, I have never found the ring worth it.
If you are in the town, you can go to the Temple and have them uncurse the character to get the ring off and you shouldn't freeze up any more. If that doesn't work, go with Wyvern's plan.
