I have no idea what the "Book of Misfortune" is about; actually, I've never encountered it. Unless, of course, you're talking about the Strategy Guide

Donating at temples raises your Presence by 1 point each time you donate (once per level increase). You can also get potions of Cure, Stone to Flesh, Mana Max, and others like that. It may help your resistances too, but I haven't tested that out.
