Oops. That DirectX 8.0 may be the culprit. It's a pretty shoddy piece of work, all the way around. One of our other posters here (Todwest)just figured out that was the problem with his game crashing over and over.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to work except to reformat and reinstall Windows with a lower version of DirectX, since 8.0 will not let you remove it or uninstall it... *groan*
