All items left lying on the ground will decay about about 24 hours. Don't think that you're the ONLY person in the entire Sword Coast who picks stuff up to see if it's worth anything. The exception to this rule is that there are a few items that do not vanish with the passage of time: These items are usually critical to some major quest, or even the Main Plot of the game itself, and would cause no end of trouble if they dissapeared into thin air. To keep items from vanishing, always store them inside a container--any chest, barrel, crate, drawer, bag, table, whatever. They will "keep" forever, although I have heard rumors that items within containers can still disappear if the container is outside a building. I doubt that, however.

The doors in Durlag's -2 will reset after about 8 hours. As you now know from experience, that's a real pain. That's why Chapter 13 of Volothamp's Comeuppance warns you of this effect, and tells you not to go back upstairs to the ground floor and Rest, or you'll get locked out of the rest of the Tower.

Either dash upstairs, stash your loot in the various containers on the ground floor, and head back down, or just pick & choose what you want to carry. There's a lot of nice stuff down there, but don't let your Inner Pack Rat get to the point where you're throwing out all your Arrows to make room for more Lynx Eye Gems. There's also something to be said for the roleplaying habit of only taking things like unique magic items: You couldn't care less about that Bastard Sword+1, or a Laeral's Tear Necklace. Consider leaving stuff like that for the next adventuring party, who will probably be less skilled than you are.
