The second switch should have opened up a previously blocked hallway in the opposite direction (of the switch).
For now, just follow the other passage and try to find the Serpent Master for a key you will need to get into the room that has a grate for a door if that is the door you are talking about.
Be nice to him and answer his questions appropriately ("yes" & "none") since you also need the same key to access the area where you will meet Elyssia and fight for your life and the Masque of Death.
