I generally don't like questions like this one, but I'm gonna answer anyway.

Now, to the topic... If you're playing for the first time you'll probably play the party of 3 fighters (paladins and rangers included), cleric, thief and mage because that actually is (IMO) the perfect party.

However, when you finish the game and when you decide to play from the start, you might want to try some other combinations. For example playing without a mage or a thief at all or even soloing.
