I tried this and could never get any more than 10 per level for warriors and 3-5 for my wizard. This took about 15-30 min per character. I finally gave up after level 7 when I was satisfied that they could survive battles and let "the catch-up" method work for me. I never saw anymore than 26 hps in one level gain for any of my characters and thought I was doing good. They had enough to survive and beat the game at least, that is what counted.
