Certain roles/classes cannot use certain items/weapons. Wizards, Warlocks & Priests (at the very least) can't use swords. You must role ascend to a fighting based character to be allowed to wield a sword. (Paladin, Ranger, Barbarian, Samurai, Ninja, & others that I am probably forgetting.
If you get the best spells as a Wizard/Warlock, then you can role ascend and get the ability to use better armor, better weapons, and other spell books.
