Recommend you go ahead and kill him now. I got the first riddle wrong (what has it got in its pocketses gollum gollum - guess I am no Bilbo Baggins), so he started to attack. A few fire and meteorstorm spells later I had a bundle of experience that advanced most of my characters. There are no kmown penalties for killing the beast.
