Have you installed the patch??
With the patch you are supposed to be able to go up and down on the pillar as often as you may desire. Without it, the pillar goes up once (taking you up) and will bring you back down again, but rises and stays there forever more.
So, you can try this:
restore your game to a point before this time OR
install the patch OR
Try taking the figurine off the altar and putting it back on again and see if that will bring it down and let you ride it the second time around.
