The vampire ring gives regeneration, which approx. counters the hp drain. Another item with regen. might do the same !? (D'Soto's chain mail e.g., or a blessed dragon plate mail.)
(I'm just pretending I know anything about it, because I have been a vampire only for a very short time, just before restoring.)
