quest items requested from a specific location do not appear until the quest is initiated. If you have just got the quest then the sword will now be in the crypt. If you have already recovered the sword then it may have been stolen by a NPC or you have sold it to a shop. If the latter you can buy it back if the former then get the quest again with another character. This may mean going for a class change with another character so that he can join the warriors guild. As soon as you join get the quest and cancel the class change. I had to do this to get the dragon arrow for Torin. Everyone on the quest gets the credit for the quest even though ony one will return the sword.
