Not entirely right. Not counting the first-level bonus feat of humans and that halfling-subrace, all classes get a feat every three levels (1,3,6,9,etc.). Fighters get a bonus feat at first level and then every second level (2,4,6,8,etc.) but will still get the regular feat every third level, and wizards get a bonus feat at first and then every fifth level (5,10,15,etc.). So a fighter will get two feats at level one, one at levels two, three and four, two again at level six, one at level eight, and so on.

Here's what I'm unclear on; how does it go for multiclasses?

Simple. The normal feats are calculated by character level (the levels of both classes together), and the bonus feats are calculated by fighter (or wizard) levels. For instance, a dwarf fighter 4/cleric 4. He's character level 8, so he got a normal feat at levels one, three and six, regardless of which class he leveled up in to reach that level. Furthermore, for his fighter levels, he got a bonus feat when he took fighter levels one, two and four. Say you create him as a cleric and level him up 50:50 (one level cleric, one level fighter, and so on). Then you'll get this feat progression:
code:
Cleric level Fighter level Character level Feat point
1 - 1 1 (starting feat)
1 1 2 1 (level 1 fighter bonus feat)
2 1 3 1 (normal level 3 feat)
2 2 4 1 (level 2 fighter bonus feat)
3 2 5 -
3 3 6 1 (normal level 6 feat)
4 3 7 -
4 4 8 1 (level 4 fighter bonus feat)
