Yeah, HOF mode is definitely ferocious. The gobbies are no pushovers, having, if I recall rightly, about 100 hp's or so. They also won't miss. So you can expect a long, tough ride through the game, as critters only get nastier the farther you go. I remember how amazed (not to mention, peeved) I was when two Horrid Wiltings weren't enough to take down a bunch of Orcs.
And yes, there are buffed items available in the game. Some are for sale from whats-her-name.
You can't bring money across into HOF mode, so carry all the junk you possibly can and sell it when you get into the game. There are things you will want to buy.
