I'd suggest going through once with a full party of different classes. IWD2 runs under 3rd edition rules, which are quite different from what you're used to in BG and earlier games. This will give you a good idea of what the different professions can do, and how the new rules work.
After that, you should be able to make a good choice for solo. Many have done the game solo, so it's certainly possible. However, just about everyone went through with a party first.
