I found the Pheonix Guards to be very easy. My PC fighter has the following equipment/stats

Stats:

Str: 18/00
Dex: 17
Con: 19
Wis: 13
Int: 17
Cha: 15

Equipment:

Helmet of Defense
Full Platemail
RoP +1
Gauntlets of Weapon Expertise
Boots of Grounding
Algernons Cloak
Large Shield +1
Girdle of Bludgeoning
Scimitar +3(not the Defender)

Total AC -5

He is level 5 or 6(about 39000 exp) and has 65 HP and a thac0 of 5 i believe and he took on all the pheonix guards several times ALONE! at the end of the fifth fight, his HP 78/7
