Shoemacker, I've heard the same thing about the generic history books. To be honest, I've read every history book I've come across and my lore didn't raise a point.

Your best bet for lore is a bard (who gets ten points of lore per level up), or a thief or a mage (who get four points). Everyone else just gets one per level up. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but wisdom affects the lore bonus, multiclassed thieves and magi still get the full lore bonus, and dual-classed thieves or magi get the bonus points only when they're leveling that half.

Unless the character has lore in the 50s, you're not going to be able to identify much. In my TotSC party, I have a character with 39 lore. She can identify +1 items, protection scrolls, and the occasional low-level spell without an ID spell.
