Reading regular books does NOT improve your characters lore ability, it improves YOUR lore ability.

Though the four magical tomes that modify intelligence and wisdom (plus the machine of lum the mad and final challenges among others) DO affect lore. Simply because lore is calculated from your Wisdom and Intelligence, as well as from your class.
