The best weapons to use against him are +3 (or better) blunt weapons. The best spell is lance of disruption, which also does blunt damage. Yes, he is a tough fight, and yes, you do really want that pool of radiance cleaned up before you take on the twins. Keep at it, and good luck!

P.S. Of course, you also want to be buffed to the max, but I'm guessing you are already.
