Pritchke and Luvian,
Thanks for the help. I managed to get through that area without resorting to using a pumped up character. Turns out I was doing ONE very small thing wrong ......

The solution:
I took my solo mage in (23rd level) with a full battery of spells - turns out I only needed THESE spells:
mirror image x 2
stoneskin
blur
haste
invisibility
improved invisibility
fire shield against fire
haste
protection from evil
summon fire elemental x2 (the big bad 16 hd critters)
animate undead x2
Here's how it went down:
Enter chamber
Cast mirror image
Monks activate and encircle mage (You WANT the monks to come off their pedestals and come to your mage)
Cast Invisibility
Run to the upper most right hand corner of the chamber - (get as FAR as you can into that corner - the monks will be in your "fog of war" and can't see you when you start casting again! THIS was the trick I had been missing!)
Cast the following defensive spells: Stoneskin, mirror image again, blur, haste, improved invisibility, fire shield, and lastly - protection from evil.
NOW call in the reinforcements! Summon fire elemental x 3 and animate dead (got two boneguards).
Stand back and watch the fun.
Final score: Mage 3 (all three monks dead and chamber completed), Monks 0
On to Chamber five!!!
