to complete a level you must finish it by killing 3, 4, 5, 6, and finally 7 monsters on that difficulty level. Each time you defeat a set of monsters you should get experience or an item, once you complete a level you get a big item. for battlesquare stategy, there are several other threads floating around about the battlesquare, you may want to look at them...
