Did you kill the high priest in snake form or kid form? One game, we killed him too quickly, when he still looked human, and the hole didn't open for us. If you're sure the passage isn't there (in the far SE corner of the room; run your cursor over the screen carefully), then likely he went too fast.
As far as I can tell, you must have the conversation with him, which only happens when he shows his true form.
