the level cap is 30. so your character level cannot be more than 30.
put it into simple meaning, the total level of your character is equal to all his classes level added up together and it must not be more than 30.
paladin 20 figther 20 = when you add them up = 40. since cap is 30 this is wrong.
paladin 20 fighter 10 = when add up = 30. this is correct.
