If your friend just wants to get this part over quickly, he can make everyone invis before entering. In fact, only one person really needs to be invis, provided the rest of the party stay right by the stairs.
Send the invis person right down the hall until he/she comes to the lever room. Pull lever, wait for undead to stagger out of room, then go in and get the stele (use alt to see it). Return to party and everyone exits.
The alternative is to rampage through the place and kill all the Yuan-Ti.
