Maybe you noticed there's a crude star drawn on the stones (not easy to see, I admit!). That's the key. Draw the usual pentagram-type star, beginning at the top portal, down to the right, up to the left, over to the right, down left, and up to the top again. You'll have to do that every visit, which is a pain.
As for the officer's tower, that comes just before the big finale, so you needn't worry about it for awhile yet.
