I've played all of the various IE games and I must dissent. I like the new 3rd ed rules. (FYI, I do not play pnp DnD.)

@Darthiir, if you don't want to have a character that's nothing but a mix of 4 or more different classes, don't make it that way. I prefer fairly pure class characters myself. I don't like taking only 1 level of X to get some little benefit. About the only multiclass mixes that I like in IWD2 (personal opinion) are a roughly 50/50 ranger/rogue, the ranger X/fighter 4, and (for the same reasons) the paladin of helm X/fighter 4.

@Axl of Darkness: The best way to learn the IWD 3rd ed rules is just to read the rule book, read the various spells, and play the game. Reading threads on this board on the topic won't hurt either.

I had no clue about the 3rd ed rules before playing IWD2, but by the time I was done with chapter 1 and somewhat into chapter 2, I think that I understood it pretty well.

I like the flexibility of the 3rd ed rules vastly more than the 2nd ed rules.
