Yes, I'm very sure the tails dissapeared. Checked the whole of dragoneye a couple of times over. Nada.
I got the mandrake root quest and finished it - hence, kiliing the high priest.
Gave up yesterday night and looked up this in a walkthrough - to confirm my suspicions that I *do* need those tails.
